This is pretty neat. I’ve been trying desperately to justify ever returning to MonBre, and I think having this type of mission system would be the only way. However, that being said, key systems would still have to be redone. I’ve come to the conclusion that the whole exploring algorithm would just need a complete redo. Showing 25 squares of content is not enough, so I’d have to add another square all around, which would be more than enough. That, however, makes a total of 49 squares shown. That’s at least 100 if statements to show the terrain, as well as displaying all these. The only solution, besides rethinking the way I do this completely -___-;; is to use AJAX technology, which the game is practically begging for.
The question is if any of this will be worth it! No matter how sexy, will people want to play a game actively in the browser?
Now the article mentions open missions, which is totally possible in monbre, but there’s no doubting that the reason most people stayed playing is because of the awesome quests. They were funny, well-written, and just overall pretty decent. So then to have other quests like “Maybe if you happen to go hunting and find some tails, you can bring them to me if you’d like and I’ll reward you with a various open-ended, non-static reward.” … I’m just not convinced there’s much I can do with the core design of the game.
Plus I’ve got that awesome Simulara, with its progressively awesome front page many of you have not yet seen. I’ll post it when i’m done completely. I dunno, it’s pretty hard to want to go back to all that muddy code just to try to resurrect two years of hard work.
